Aromatherapy for PMS

By Andrea Lewis

Whether you suffer from Premenstrual Syndrome, or suffer because of someone who does, this article is for you. For those of you who suffer from some of the symptoms associated with PMS, you're bound to learn something useful as well.

PMS is a combination of physical and emotional disturbances that occur after a woman ovulates and ends with the onset of menstruation. If you're not certain if you or your loved one has PMS, these are the symptoms:

  • Irritability
  • Nervousness
  • Weight gain
  • Fluid retention
  • Constipation
  • Headaches
  • Migraine
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Changes in mood
  • Breast swelling and tenderness (mastalgia)
  • Insomnia (usually starts a few days before the onset of menses)
  • Food cravings
  • Acne
  • Even sinus conditions can be exacerbated
PMS occurs 2 to 14 days before the onset of menstruation. The cause of PMS is not fully understood. But the following remedies will ease your symptoms and restore your sense of physical and emotional well-being.

Remedy #1

Blend 3 to 6 drops Clary Sage with 1 to 2 drops Rose Otto and 3 to 5 drops of lavender and add to a tub full of warm bathwater.
If you're bathing during the day, add 6 drops Grapefruit; in the evening, add 3 drops Jasmine Absolute.

You can use this "bathing" method every day, until the onset of menses. After, or instead of the bathing method, you should use remedy #2.

Remedy #2

In a small amber glass bottle (to protect remedy from light), add the following ingredients:

2 TB base oil -- either Almond, Grapeseed (for oily skin), or Apricot Kernel
6 drops Geranium
4 drops Rosewood (Bois de Rose) or Rose Bulgar
6 drops Cypress
4 drops Mandarin
6 drops Clary Sage
4 drops Grapefruit

Put the cap on the bottle and gently mix the ingredients, by swirling the bottle. To use, gently massage into your abdominal area.

During menses, and even prior to its onset, I recommend the Petrissage method, for applying Remedy #2.

Petrissage is like gently kneading dough. Each movement should be slow and careful, never causing pain. Use slight pressure on your thumbs, in this movement. The picture to the left shows the petrissage technique on the back, notice how the thumbs are used to knead the flesh, but there is no good reason you can't perform petrissage on your own abdominal area.

In Conclusion
You can use these remedies all month, every month, to curtail PMS symptoms, making them milder with each passing month. In addition, you will find that regular exercise, good nutrition, and the support of friends and family will greatly add to your healing success.

Medical science has yet to discover the "exact" cause of PMS, but at least there is something you can do to ease your symptoms.... Naturally.
